Wichita Falls Backyards Need More Than a Slab

A backyard patio in Wichita Falls has to earn its keep. Summers here run 100°F-plus for weeks at a stretch, winters bring real ice, and the red clay underneath the yard swells and shrinks with every wet-dry cycle. Pour a patio the lazy way — thin, unreinforced, straight onto raw clay — and it starts cracking and flaking within a few seasons. Pour it right and it's the most-used square footage on the property for thirty years.

We size patios around how you actually use the space. A grilling patio is 10x12 minimum. A dining-plus-entertaining patio wants 14x18. A pool deck is a different design entirely, with a non-slip finish and drainage planned from the start. We walk the yard, measure, and quote you a real number based on the size and finish — not a per-square-foot average that doesn't match your site.

Patio Types We Pour

  • Rectangular slab patios — standard 4″ pour, broom or brushed finish
  • Wrap-around patios — L-shape or U-shape hugging the house corners
  • Detached patios — freestanding pad, often near a fire pit or above-ground pool
  • Pool deck patios — non-slip broom finish or textured stamp, drainage-first layout
  • Lake-place patios — weekend homes and cabins out toward Lake Arrowhead and Lakeside City get the same reinforced spec as in-town pours
  • Stamped and decorative patios — see the stamped concrete page

We pour patios all over the area — in-town backyards, acreage places outside Holliday and Archer City, and additions behind older homes in Iowa Park and Burkburnett.

Thickness, Reinforcement, and Joints

4″ thick — standard residential patio, no vehicle load. Rebar or fiber reinforcement in the pour, because clay movement doesn't spare patios just because they're light-duty. Isolation joint where the patio meets the house foundation — a compressible strip that lets the patio and the house slab move independently as the clay cycles, without cracking either one. Control joints every 8–10 feet — pre-planned crack locations that keep the visible crack pattern regular.

Finish Options

  1. Broom finish — the default. Slip-resistant, weather-durable.
  2. Brushed finish — tighter texture than broom, softer look.
  3. Trowel finish — smooth. Beautiful indoors, too slippery outdoors.
  4. Salt finish — rock-salt pressed into the wet surface, washed out after cure — shallow round pockmarks with real character.
  5. Exposed aggregate — surface layer washed off during cure to expose stones — great texture, and it holds up well through freeze-thaw winters.
  6. Stamped — pattern imprinted into wet concrete. Full detail on the stamped concrete page.
  7. Integral color — pigment added to the mix, coloring the concrete all the way through.

Design Considerations for Wichita Falls

  • Sun: west and south-facing patios need shade to be usable in July and August. Pergola-ready anchors can be set into the pour if you're planning shade later.
  • Wind: open lots west of town along the 287 corridor take steady afternoon wind. Plan a windbreak or site the patio in the lee of the house.
  • Drainage: patio slabs should slope a quarter-inch per foot away from the house. Standing water kills the finish — and in winter it freezes and pits the surface.
  • Clay subgrade: the same expansive red clay that heaves driveways sits under most local backyards. Moisture-conditioned, compacted subgrade isn't optional.

What It Costs in Wichita Falls

FinishRelative cost
BroomBaseline — the most economical durable finish
Brushed / saltModest premium over broom
Exposed aggregateMid-range premium
Integral colorSmall add on any finish
Stamped / decorativeThe largest premium — priced per pattern and color

What moves the number most: square footage, finish, demolition of an existing patio, and access — a backyard with no gate wide enough for a buggy means wheelbarrow labor or a line pump. Every quote is a fixed written price after we see the yard, never a guess.

Timing & Cure

Same rules as driveways — early-morning pours in the hot months, no pours when rain is forecast within 4 hours of finish. Most patios pour in 6–8 hours from truck arrival to finish. Cure covers stay on for 3–7 days. Foot traffic: 3 days. Furniture: 7 days. Full cure: 28 days. Grills, fire pits, and heat sources should stay off the concrete for the first 30 days — thermal shock on green concrete causes surface cracks.

The Isolation Joint

Patios always tie into the house at some elevation. We install a compressible expansion strip (asphalt-impregnated fiber, typically half-inch thick) between the patio slab and the house foundation. On expansive clay this matters even more than usual: each slab moves independently through the seasonal swell-shrink cycle without cracking either one. Fifteen minutes of work that saves the patio.

Patio FAQs

How big should my Wichita Falls patio be?

Grilling only: 10x12. Grilling plus dining: 12x14. Grilling, dining, and entertaining: 14x18 or larger. In this heat, plan for the shade structure at the same time as the slab.

Will a patio crack on this clay soil?

Any concrete can crack, but a patio on moisture-conditioned, compacted subgrade with reinforcement and proper control joints cracks where the joints tell it to — not across the middle. Skipping the prep is what wrecks patios here.

Broom or trowel finish?

Broom for outdoor use — it's slip-resistant. Trowel is too slick outdoors, especially wet or iced.

How long until I can use it?

Foot traffic in 3 days, furniture in 7, full 28-day cure before heavy use or heat sources like fire pits.

Do you pour patios at lake places?

Yes — weekend homes and cabins out toward Lake Arrowhead and Lakeside City are regular stops. Same reinforced spec as in-town work.

Do you work in Holliday and Archer City?

Yes — plus Iowa Park, Burkburnett, and the rest of the three-county area. See service areas.
