The Wichita Falls Driveway Problem

Most cracked driveways in Wichita Falls aren't cracked because the concrete was bad. They're cracked because the ground under them moves. The red clay that runs across Wichita, Archer, and Clay counties is expansive — it swells when spring storms soak it and shrinks hard through the 100-degree stretches of summer. A slab poured straight onto that clay without prep rides the cycle up and down every year, and the cracks show up long before the concrete itself wears out.

Age is the other half of the story. A large share of Wichita Falls neighborhoods were built out between the 1950s and the 1970s, and thousands of original driveways from that era are simply at the end of their life — scaled surfaces, wide cracks, slabs tipping toward the garage. Driveway replacement is the single most common job we handle: demolition and haul-off, subgrade re-work, and a new reinforced pour that's built for the soil it sits on.

We spend real time on subgrade prep: compacted base, moisture-conditioned clay so the ground under the slab starts the cycle in a stable state, and rebar tied on chairs at mid-depth. For RV pads and heavy-load driveways, we default to 6-inch pours with heavier rebar on tighter centers. Standard residential runs 4 inches with rebar throughout unless the design calls for something different.

What We Pour

  • Driveway replacements — demolition + haul-off of the existing slab, subgrade re-work, new reinforced pour
  • New driveway installation — full design, forms, subgrade, pour, finish
  • Driveway extensions — matched finish to the existing slab, cold-joint doweling
  • RV and boat pads — 6″ pours, 4,000 PSI mix, wider expansion joints
  • Approaches and aprons — including curb approaches where the city or county requires a specific detail
  • Broom, brushed, exposed aggregate, or stamped finish — see the stamped concrete page

We pour driveways across the area — replacements on the older streets of Iowa Park, rental-refresh work in Burkburnett near Sheppard AFB, and long rural approaches out toward Holliday and Archer City.

Mix Design for Wichita Falls Weather

Exterior concrete in Wichita Falls needs three things done right:

  1. Air-entrainment 5–7% — non-negotiable here. Wichita Falls catches real ice storms and repeated freeze-thaw swings each winter, and freeze-thaw damage happens when water in the concrete pore structure expands as it freezes. Entrained air pockets give it somewhere to go. Skip this and driveway edges spall within a few winters — air-entrained mix and sealing matter more here than in most of Texas.
  2. Hot-weather practice in summer — the 100°F+ stretches of July and August stress fresh concrete. We pour early, manage evaporation, and control the cure so the surface doesn't dry out faster than the slab below it.
  3. 4,000 PSI at 28-day strength for driveways, 4,500 PSI for RV pads. 3,000 PSI is fine for walkways but not for anything a vehicle parks on.

Rebar or Wire Mesh?

Rebar every time on driveways in this area. Wire mesh sinks to the bottom of the pour if it isn't chair-supported perfectly, and it can't handle the tension that expansive clay puts into a slab as it swells and shrinks. Rebar tied on chairs stays at mid-depth where it belongs and gives real tensile strength when the slab flexes.

Timing — When To Pour

  • Summer: early-morning pours, finished before mid-day heat. Cure management in writing.
  • Winter: normal daytime pours except when a hard freeze or ice is forecast within 48 hours of pour — blankets, accelerator, or reschedule.
  • Rain within 4 hours of pour completion: we reschedule. Fresh concrete plus rain equals surface pitting — and a spring storm over saturated clay is the worst possible start for a new slab.

Pricing — Real Wichita Falls Numbers

Driveway replacement in North Texas most commonly lands in the $6 to $11 per square foot range depending on thickness (4″ residential vs 6″ RV or heavy-load), reinforcement, finish (broom standard; stamped or decorative adds a premium), how much demolition and haul-off the old slab needs, and access — backyard or tight-lot pours sometimes need a pump. That's a planning range, not a quote: you get a fixed written price after the site walk, and no surprise change orders unless you change scope.

Cure & Use Timeline

Keep concrete moist for the first 7 days if temps are above 80°F. We'll leave you a printed cure sheet.

What You'll See Us Do

  1. Mark, measure, and stake the layout
  2. Excavate to design depth (typically 8–10″ for a 4″ pour with compacted base)
  3. Set forms, compact base, moisture-condition the clay subgrade
  4. Tie rebar on chairs at mid-depth
  5. Pour and screed to grade
  6. Bull-float, edge, joint
  7. Broom or specialty finish
  8. Apply cure compound or blankets
  9. Strip forms next day, dress edges, haul off waste
  10. Written cure sheet plus 10-day follow-up call

Driveway FAQs

How thick should a Wichita Falls driveway be?

4″ for standard residential, 6″ for RV pads, trailers, or anything heavy. Thickness matters less than subgrade prep on expansive clay — both have to be right.

My driveway heaved and cracked — will a new one do the same?

Not if the subgrade is handled. Most heaved driveways around Wichita Falls were poured on unconditioned clay. Moisture-conditioning and compacting the subgrade, plus rebar and correct control joints, is what breaks the cycle.

How long until I can park on it?

3 days foot traffic, 7 days light cars, 14 days daily-driver, 28 days full cure for RVs and trailers.

Do you use rebar or wire mesh?

Rebar on every driveway, chair-supported at mid-depth. Mesh sinks in the pour and can't handle clay-swell tension.

Can you replace just the cracked sections?

Sometimes — if the rest of the slab is sound, partial replacement with doweled joints works. On most 1950s–1970s originals the whole slab is at end of life and full replacement is the better spend. We'll tell you straight after the site walk.

Do you pour driveways in Iowa Park and Burkburnett?

Yes — plus Holliday, Archer City, and everywhere in Wichita, Archer, and Clay counties. See service areas.
